Grinders are called by many other names. In the plastics industry, most people refer to these single-shaft machines as shredders. Grinders came out of the wood industry through necessity and are now commonly used because you can ‘batch-feed’ these machines using box-dumpers or self-dumping hoppers, even front end loaders or fork-lifts. Used to be that hammermills was the only way to size-reduce wood and lumber. These high speed, high noise, high maintenance machines were always jamming and had to control feed by the operators.

Today the grinders are installed in all facets and applications. Grinders for plastic are used for the initial size-reduction phase. In some applications, the chips coming from the grinders are automatically transferred by conveyor into the old hammermills for further size-reduction. In others, the grinder generates the required chip size without regrinding. Suddenly, pallets and hardwood blocks are reclaimed without danger of jamming hammermills. Boxes full of scrap can be dumped and reduced at once. Large parts are recycled without cutting them down first.
